Finding a solution to the problems of conflict minerals in the DRC Congo is complex. Incentivising corporations involved to tow the line of transparency and accountability is fraught with difficulties because of the landscape, the industrial significance of the mineral and profits available. In Europe, the OECD Due Diligence Guidance on Responsible Supply Chains perhaps lacks the bite it needs to compel positive behaviour on the part of major actors. What about the U.S. Dodd Frank Act and the DRC’s new mining code? Do they have the relevant bite? What is the best way forward?
